Short Introduction
The California Historical Society (CHS) aims to 'inspire and empower Californians to make the past a meaningful part of their contemporary lives.' (www.californiahistoricalsociety.org/)
The Eadweard Muybridge collection at CHS includes photographic prints of all sizes (mounted and unmounted) ranging from stereograph cards to multi-plate panoramas to mammoth plates.
This includes images of the Pacific Coast and other California scenes, including mining; views of the Sierra Nevada; Yosemite; Mariposa Grove; Geyser Springs; San Francisco and vicinity, including his 11-plate panorama (1877); California Indians and the Modoc War; Central Pacific Railroad; Vancouver Island; Alaska and the Isthmus of Panama, as well as Muybridge’s studies in Animal Locomotion.
The collection consists of works illustrated by Muybridge as well as photographs published by Helios, Bradley & Rulofson, Helios’ Flying Studio, and Henry Ehman.
Additionally, the CHS manuscripts collection (MS 3126) includes letters from J. D. B. Stillman, a physician, concerning Muybridge's Animal Locomotion studies which were commissioned by Leland Stanford.
