Short Introduction

The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University holds a rich collection of literary papers and early manuscripts in the fields of literature, theology, history, and the natural sciences. This includes a great deal of original Muybridge material.

The Herman W. Liebert Collection of Autographs (Gen Mss 237) includes a single ALS from Muybridge to A. E. Jessup, dated November 17, 1889.

The Beinecke’s general collection of rare books includes a copy of Muybridge’s 'Animal Locomotion' (1887), a virtually complete set of the plates, a copy of his 'Descriptive Zoopraxography' (1893), a copy of Stillman’s 'The Horse in Motion' (1882), and the University of Pennsylvania’s 'Animal Locomotion: The Muybridge Work at the University of Pennsylvania: The Method and the Results' (1888).

Beinecke’s Collection of Western Americana has several small groups of Muybridge’s original photographic prints including two copies of his 1877 panorama of San Francisco from Mark Hopkins’ residence at the top of California Street. The Western Americana Collection also has 50 to 60 Muybridge stereoscopic photographs, a single carte-de-visite photograph by Muybridge, and a copy of Houseworth’s Sun Pictures of the Yosemite Valley (1874), in which some of the 44 mounted photographs may be by Muybridge.

The Peter Palmquist Collection of Western Photographers (currently Uncat Mss 508) includes a mixture of original and copy photography as well as research files about Muybridge. Material by or about Muybridge may be found in boxes 37 and 43.

Yale’s Visual Resources collection, part of the Art Library at Yale, also appears to hold photographs by Muybridge. The Film Stills and the History of Photography Slide Collection lists a Muybridge slide component in box 27. The University Library’s on-line public access catalog lists 41 entries for books by and about Muybridge.
