Short Introduction

The California State Library is a public research facility which has been established for 160 years.

Muybridge holdings here include over 500 images in various formats. Among these, in the California History Section, are 60 views of the Pacific Coast of Central America, an album of 40 mammoth plate Yosemite views, 168 stereographs, 16 further mammoth plate views and approximately 10 cabinet size views.

Rare books include John S Hittel's guidebook of Yosemite from 1868, which holds 20 Muybridge photographs; an 1893 presentation copy of Muybridge's 'Descriptive Zoopraxography'; a signed 1902 copy of 'Animals in Motion'; a signed 1901 version of the 'Human Figure in Motion' and an 11 panel panorama of San Francisco.

Various advertising materials for Muybridge's work, United State Patenting documents, as well as newspaper articles detailing events in his life and work are also available here.
