Short Introduction
The Bancroft Library is the primary special collections library at the University of California, Berkeley. One of the largest and most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and unique materials in the United States, Bancroft supports major research and instructional activities and plays a leading role in the development of the University's research collections.
The Muybridge collection includes approximately 1800 stereoscopic images, the majority of which come from the Muybridge 'Lone Mountain Collection'. This collection consists of 1700 stereographs, 6 albums and 39 individual photographs taken during the years 1867 to 1880.
Other Muybridge highlights include 45 Mammoth Plate Albumen prints of the valley of the Yosemite, Sierra Nevada Mountains, and Mariposa Grove of Mammoth Trees.
The Bancroft also houses a Panorama of San Francisco from California St. hill. This includes 13 photographic albumen prints mounted on linen which form 1 panorama. The image is 54 x 41 cm, in a portfolio of 70 x 45 cm.
Various Newspaper cuttings also exist, as well as two separate portfolios of Muybridge Papers, which include correspondance between Muybridge and Leland Stanford and Janet Pendegast Leigh. These portfolios also include microfilm versions of the Muybridge scrapbook.
'Animal Locomotion' (1887) is also present at the library.
Past Exhibitions
Bancroft have not mounted specific Muybridge exhibitions. However, they have lent to other organistions for this purpose, including recently for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC for the upcoming exhibition this year, 'Helios: Eadweard Muybridge in a time of Change'.
