Short Introduction

The Margaret Herrick Library at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, founded in 1928, is dedicated to the history of the motion picture. The library contains 'over 10 million photographs, 300,000 clipping files, 80,000 screenplays, 35,000 movie posters and 32,000 books' (http://www.oscars.org/library/about/history.html).

Muybridge highlights within the collection include 50 photographic prints and 65 collotype plates from Animal Locomotion.

Published works by Muybridge held in the collection include:
'The Attitudes of Animals in Motion' (1882) and 'Animal Locomotion' (1887).

There are also many articles and cuttings pertaining to Muybridge at the Margaret Herrick Library, many of which are available on microfiche.

Within the Special Collections, there is a set of research papers for an article on Muybridge titled “Occident Trotting – A Strange Title", as well as copies of two of Edweard Muybridge’s U.S. patents: no. 212,865, dated March 4, 1879 and no. 9,960, reissue date Dec. 6, 1881, in the Earl Theisen collection.

Research photocopies of materials from the collection are available on a limited basis. Researchers may also order digital prints of photographs from the collection.
